As a new academic year dawns on us, whether you’re in your first year at Sussex or just looking for new things to do in Brighton, The Channel’s committee is hoping to push you in the right direction!
The Rose Hill Tavern- Tallulah (Blog Editor)
This small venue is located just off London Road and showcases itself as a music and creative arts hub. Raining Books- Tilly (Editor in Chief)
Raining Books is an independent, locally owned second-hand bookstore nestled in the heart of The Lanes. Upon entering, you are immediately engulfed by a wide variety of books, with endless stacks of them from floor to ceiling. It is the perfect place to get lost if you are looking for a new read or even searching for a specific one. They are open every day except Sunday, so be sure to drop by if you have a day in town or if you are on the hunt for some new (or old) literature.
The Ledward Centre - Sophie (Arts Editor)
The Ledward Centre is an LGBTQ+ community space on Jubilee Street, only a short walk away from Brighton train station. It offers a cafe, gallery, cinema, and community space for anyone in Brighton to enjoy.
The cafe is open from Monday to Sunday and features a pay-it-forward board where customers can choose to donate a coffee to other members of the community. The centre regularly runs fun events such as the Queer Makers Market, which is described as “a celebration of queer creativity, showcasing a diverse array of talent from within the LGBTQ+ community and its allies.”

The Garden Café- Rowan (Editor in Chief)
Hey! I’m Rowan and my recommendation is the Garden Café. This lovely cafe can be found in the Laines on North Road and features a bunch of super cool drink choices! From blueberry and lavender lattes to iced matchas, the drinks offered are always colourful and a bit different! As well as this, they offer a wide range of food options like full English breakfasts, a lovely range of salads, and various toasties (as well as sweet treats!). More than the food, however, the cafe is full of plants and so has such a nice vibe to it, and is just a lovely place to have a drink and a catchup!! Deffo check it out :)
Anna’s Museum- Lottie (Prose Editor)
Located on Upper N Street, Anna’s Museum displays Anna’s unique array of weird and wonderful treasures. Despite being a private collection, passers-by can witness Anna’s eclectic mix of historical curiosities.

The Rossi Bar- Mali (Prose Editor)
The Rossi bar is my absolute favourite place in Brighton. With dim, orange glowing lights, £5 aperol spritz’, and live music downstairs alternating genres nightly, it’s a perfect venue for anyone looking for a friendly and less studentey vibe and an overall cheap night out :)
The Painting Pottery Cafe- Em (Prose and Arts Editor)

Snooper’s Paradise- Kitty (Arts and Social Media Editor)
Snooper’s Paradise is Brighton’s biggest antique store/indoor flea market situated in the North Laine. An iconic and much-loved part of the Laines, it houses dozens of stalls arraying all manner of vintage and second-hand goodies. From trinkets to records, books to accessories, and furniture to postcards, there’s something for every second-hand lover. Outside the front, you will find beautiful and reasonably priced jewellery. Upstairs, you will find a fabulous vintage clothing boutique with treasure troves of retro gems, adorned with sequins, feathers, and beads.
