‘keeping your brain free’

Photography by Skyla Hillan-Schunemann

you can’t be a revolutionary

and a collaborator

while keeping your brain free

you can’t build up your CV all week

and tear it apart on weekends

it would be like having two sheets of paper

thinking you’re destroying capitalism

but sawing the pieces back together

the next day

you can’t be a revolutionary

and a collaborator

while keeping your brain free

you are creating your own Sisyphus’ inferno

condemned to roll your stone up the hill

and see it fall down everyday

only to pick it up again

you can’t be a revolutionary

and a collaborator

while keeping your brain free

the craziest of all is

how you make sense of

your condition

saying we all need to eat

but you want to eat well

in a world you say doesn’t feed all

you take people’s oxygen

then give them a drink

under another hat

you can’t be a revolutionary

and a collaborator

while keeping your brain free

under your different hat

i see the same eyes

the same thoughts

and the same name:

one of my own

you can’t be a revolutionary

and a collaborator

while keeping your brain free

i don’t like to hear your constant talk

that reassures your troubled thoughts

lying to yourself

the two hats sawn together, poorly

you can’t be a revolutionary

and a collaborator

while keeping your brain free

i care about you too much

i really do

but i can only watch

waiting for you to leave your heavy rock

and walk away

eating less but breathing well

i’ll be there this day

to feel the sunshine on our skins

free from weight

free from duty

free

free

poor but free

you can’t be a revolutionary

and a collaborator

while keeping your brain free

‘what a fucking strange planet’

i met this guy

he told me

why are you sad

you are so rich

i answered him

you only see in me

your own worry

you say the uk needs shrinks

i say europe needs social justice

how can we party

without worry

when people

drown in our own sea

i drown my worries into that drink

in an eco-cup please

what a fucking strange planet

what is the link between

me dancing tiptoes after a long week

looking after my drink

i don’t want to be spiked

and human rights -

really,

tell me
