Moonchild Sanelly is a vibrant and eclectic South African artist whose brand of music is described by Spotify as “electric-pop-ghetto-funk”. She is known for her acclaimed debut album Rabualpha, her latest single; Big Man with the artist Self Esteem, and collaborations with globally popular artists like Beyoncé, Gorillaz, and Diplo.
In November, The Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts (ACCA) welcomed Moonchild Sanelly to Sussex as part of the centre’s Autumn 2024 programme. Her opening act; London based alt-pop artist Paige Kennedy, told the audience how incredible it had been to support Moonchild on her European tour. The minute Moonchild Sanelly appeared on stage to chat with the audience and introduce her first song, the entire crowd was instantly charmed by her magnetic energy. I came to the show without any expectations, and I was quickly won over by the joyousness and charisma that shone through her music, her interactions with the crowd, and various anecdotes about her exes that she told through laughter when explaining the inspiration behind songs like Undumpable and Over You.
The audience sang along the loudest to her 2022 release with Sad Night Dynamite; Demon. Other songs like Do My Dance and Money Tree featured in her set, alongside songs that appear in her upcoming album Full Moon, which comes out on January 10th of this coming year. If you have the chance to catch Moonchild Sanelly on her next tour, I recommend that you bring your friends, and prepare to have her music stuck in your head for days afterwards!
ACCA is continuing to put on a fantastic line-up of events in the near future, with more live music, theatre, dance, and film screenings; all of which you can book tickets for at: https://www.attenboroughcentre.com/.
